Professional Development: A Cost--or an Investment?

Happy Independence Day, friend of MTM!

I hope you are finding some time in your summer for some well-deserved rest.  Likely you are also spending a little time considering your upcoming school year.  If you are responsible for the professional development of your faculty, you likely are wrestling with the "costs" of that process--financial, time, etc.  Without question, professional development translates into dollars and cents.

Today I would invite you to consider professional development as an "investment" rather than a "cost."  When we invest in something, we plan to enjoy an added dividend later.  Likewise, when you help your faculty team access high-quality, engaging professional development, the short- and long-term benefits on learning, morale, and collaboration are evident.

This week, I invested in some professional development by attending the National Charter Schools Conference in Chicago (Information).  It was a chance to learn more about a burgeoning educational phenomenon, interact with vendors, attend several sectionals, and hear Bill Gates deliver a keynote address.  Keep in mind that my one-day pass cost $475!  Yet I viewed it as an investment which would pay some clear dividends to me, both in the short term and long term.

The MTM Project intends to be your professional development investment.  There are many high-quality, engaging resources available in our member products and services.  (Check out our latest online course, the one-credit EDG 804 Interactive Whiteboards, by scrolling down to the bottom of this newsletter!) The singular focus of the MTM Project is to support your ministry and mission through education in technology.  Best of all, the MTM membership pays quick dividends.  If only one or two of your faculty colleagues take one of our educational technology graduate courses, your school's membership cost is recouped!

So while all professional development takes dollars, an investment in the MTM Project can make a lot of sense

Get the Most Out of Your Investment

Perhaps you have noticed the movement over the past few years to outfit classrooms with interactive whiteboards. Schools all over the country are finding creative ways to raise money for the purchase and installation of these tools.  Interactive whiteboards, whether they are from Promethean, Smart, or some other company, have the ability to meet the needs of all learners - kinesthetic, auditory, and visual - within a classroom.

Recently I shared a presentation with a group of administrators from around the country. I posed a very important question to them: "Now that your schools have spent tens of thousands of dollars on interactive whiteboards, do you know what the current research says about how to get the most out of these tools for student learning?" Only one participant raised his hand. In other words, many schools were probably not getting the greatest benefit out of their investment.

We all want to be effective stewards of what God has given us - students, technology tools, etc. Doesn't it then make sense to take the time to know how to do that in the best way possible? This is where The Ministry Technology Mentor (MTM) Project can help. Through the discipline of engaging in graduate level courses for professional development at a fraction of the normal cost, online students are exposed to the discipline of examining current educational technology research and provided the necessary resources to make informed decisions for their school. Student are equipped and empowered to avoid being swayed by the latest technology fad but to rigorously embrace those tools and practices that will provide the greatest benefit for the children that we serve. Isn't that we all want - to serve God's children and give them the best educational experience possible?

Take a look at the future course offerings from MTM and our partner, Concordia University Wisconsin, found below this article. We look forward to having you join us as together we seek to best prepare our children for their future.
